What is the Internet?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers and devices that communicate with one another using standardized communication protocols&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/How-Does-The-Internet-Work#ref1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not one giant computer. One of the key projects was ARPANET, funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), a division of the U.S. Department of Defense&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fitech101.aalto.fi\/fi\/courses\/web-software-development-v1\/part-8\/2-origins-of-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of&nbsp;<strong>packet switching<\/strong>\u2014breaking data into smaller packets that could be routed independently through a network\u2014was revolutionary. What is DNS?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DNS = Domain Name System = Internet&#8217;s Phonebook<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/How-Does-The-Internet-Work#ref1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cse.iitb.ac.in\/~mythili\/teaching\/cs641_autumn2015\/notes\/lec05.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of remembering:&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/142.251.xxx.xxx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">142.251.xxx.xxx<\/a><\/strong>, we type&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">google.com<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DNS converts it. The DNS system is hierarchical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your request goes to a local DNS server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it doesn&#8217;t know the address, it asks a\u00a0<strong>root server<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The root server redirects to a\u00a0<strong>TLD (Top Level Domain) server<\/strong>\u00a0(e.g., .com, .in)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You walk down the hierarchy until you reach the\u00a0<strong>authoritative name server<\/strong>\u00a0for that domain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cse.iitb.ac.in\/~mythili\/teaching\/cs641_autumn2015\/notes\/lec05.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DNS responses can be&nbsp;<strong>cached<\/strong>&nbsp;with a TTL (Time To Live), so the chain doesn&#8217;t need to be traversed every single time&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cse.iitb.ac.in\/~mythili\/teaching\/cs641_autumn2015\/notes\/lec05.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. ISPs connect multiple end-user organizations, providing the on-ramp to the global network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. How Does Data Travel?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data doesn&#8217;t travel as one huge file.
